Our Hindi audience is becoming somewhat accustomed to taboo films, though not completely. It has been almost a decade now that Bollywood filmmakers are trying something different and touching on taboo subjects.
Ayushmann Khurrana is doing great out there, but don’t forget the others. Please remember there is also Rajkummar Rao. His “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga” with Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor broke the silence on the issues of gay girls, and his gay-driven “Aligarh” starring Manoj Bajpayee left us stunned.
“Lavender marriage” is a topic that hasn’t been attempted before, and now Rajkummar Rao is here to take up that responsibility.
While most taboo films, in fact all films, end with an acknowledgment of identity, Badhaai Do begins with this and then goes on to much further.
The concept helps a lot because you’re not trying to hide secrets from the audience; Rather, you know it from the very beginning, and then go on with it until you accept the reality.
All previous movies ended with either marriage or acceptance of LGBT people, but did any of them ever attempt to show what happens next?
Suppose a bisexual couple gets married. What about life after marriage? What about their parenthood, which is not possible for them? No film has ever attempted these things, and that’s where Badhaai Do scored high marks.
The film is about Shardul, a cop and a gay man, who marries a gay girl, Suman. They do not reveal their sexual identities to their families and continue to live as a decorated couple while they continue their sexual relationship with their partner.
So naturally, after a year or so, family members start pushing them towards parenthood, and then chaos ensues.
Badhaai Ho’s screenplay needed a lot of trimming. Everything moves slowly, making you bored most of the time. Even the comedy is not as hilarious as you expected. Don’t know why but Rajkummar Rao has made his image in comedy genre too, so you ask him more, but humanly, it is not possible every time.
Badhaai Do falls into a genre where even doing a good comedy is a difficult task – ultimately hurting the humor in a big way.
One thing is certain: this is not a film that the public can enjoy and understand. These topics are still taboo and cannot be viewed by family viewers. Also, it is coming up on Valentine’s Weekend, making it more attractive for couples.
Those who belong to the LGBT community can cherish this special Valentine’s Day experience forever.
To add additional metaphor to the character, we see Rajkummar Rao playing the role of a macho boy who has sexy physics.
Same thing that Ayushmann Khurrana did in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui because you need special characters to break the taboos so that more people can connect with it. Frankly, the prince is losing his grip.
The same man who excelled in Shahid, CityLights, Trapped, and Newton to raise his level above our expectation, is now ditching his greatness. He looks very sexy, I must say, and even though the performance is good, it doesn’t live up to his own high standards.
On the other hand, after “Saand Ki Aankh”, the land again gets into a challenging area. She plays the role of a lesbian girl with conviction and doesn’t shy away from the undeniable characteristics of the role.
Seema Pahwa and Sheeba Chaddha are superb in supporting roles. Despite the less screen space they make an impact and get some insanely funny scenes.
Chum Darang’s pronunciation sounds terrifying, but his performance makes up for the loss. When Lovleen Mishra and Nitesh Pandey are on screen make sure you enjoy every gag.
Badhaai Do has a lot of songs, inexplicably. The album by Amit Trivedi, Tanishk Bagchi, Ankit Tiwari and Khamosh Singh has a lot of content for couples, but the general audience is looking for something else.
Still, once in a while, it’s okay. There’s some humor attached to the dialogues, but they don’t produce any organic laughs.
Harshvardhan Kulkarni’s direction in Hunter was appealing as he used all realistic principles to describe his characters, whereas in Badhaai Do, he used nothing but many clichés.
Its not a big mistake because we have gone through almost everything that can be brought about by taboo movies.
Now, it’s just a matter of humor and storytelling. Otherwise, you’re smart enough to predict the story.
Overall, Badhaai Do is a daring effort that seeks to shatter all the insights into the problems facing the LGBT community, from hiding one’s own identity to marriage to never-revealing paternity, but at its slow pace. is hurt.
